Environmental Awareness

There is so much to learn about what helps our outdoor spaces thrive and what impacts the environment in a negative way.

What is MRCA?

The MRCA is dedicated to the preservation and management of local open space and parkland, wildlife habitat, coastal access, watershed lands, and trails in both wilderness and urban settings, and to ensuring access to public parkland and coastal resources. The MRCA works in cooperation with the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy and other local government partners to acquire parkland, participate in vital planning processes, work towards wildfire resilience, connect wildlife habitat, and complete major park improvement projects. The agency provides natural resources and scientific expertise, critical regional planning services, and education and leadership programs for thousands of youth each year. It is one of the lead agencies revitalizing the Los Angeles River and its tributaries.

What is the SMMC?

The Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy was established by the California State Legislature in 1980. Since that time, it has helped to preserve over 75,000 acres of parkland in both wilderness and urban settings, and improved more than 114 public recreational facilities throughout Southern California. Additionally, it has given grants to nonprofit organizations for educational and interpretation programs that have served hundreds of thousands of children and other park visitors.

Who is Tree People?

Born from the vision of a teenager more than 50 years ago, TreePeople inspires people to come together to grow a more climate-resilient Southern California. We have planted and cared for millions of trees, restored thousands of acres of fire-scarred wildlands, and helped to educate hundreds of thousands of environmentalists.

When California experiences climate emergencies, TreePeople researches and implements sustainable solutions to protect and restore natural resources. When fires burn, TreePeople restores native ecosystems to grow more resilient wilderness areas and communities. When communities face extreme heat, TreePeople plants and distributes shade trees. When schools are covered in asphalt, TreePeople greens schoolyards. When students worry about the future, TreePeople provides tools and education to train our next generation of environmental leaders. As the world faces increasing threats from climate change, TreePeople helps unite communities around actionable solutions.

We call it "The Rainforest"

If you've hiked the Betty B Dearing trail, you know what I'm talking about. The beautiful oasis in the middle of the hike from Mulholland to Fryman. A forest of Eucalyptus trees that has created its own little ecosystem. It's a great place to rest and picnic. There is lots of shade and even a stream. It's pretty to look up through the trees. But those trees... they are not our friends. Click the "Learn more" button learn about why the Eucalyptus trees are so bad for our native environement and how they got here in the first place.
